Born in Pune, Sawant defied societal norms by leaving home during her teenage years to pursue her path. In 2000, she founded the Sakhi Char Chowghi Trust, an NGO dedicated to counseling and promoting safe practices for the transgender community. In 2014, Sawant made history by being the first transgender activist to advocate for adoption rights for her community in the Supreme Court. She also played a significant role in the landmark case that led to the Supreme Court recognizing transgender people as the third gender.
