A significant fire erupted within the Pulianthope slaughterhouse, which has been non-operational for years, causing damage to the animal slaughtering equipment on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The local police reported a major fire at the Greater Chennai Corporation-owned slaughterhouse around 2 p.m. on Sunday. A section of the slaughterhouse had been allocated to a private company over a decade ago for modernization, but due to legal issues, the facility remained closed, leading to valuable equipment worth lakhs of rupees deteriorating inside.
Upon detecting smoke, Pulianthope police alerted the Fire and Rescue Services. Firefighters from Vyasarpadi, Vepery, and Kodungaiyur promptly responded, breaking open the unit’s doors to control the fire.
Several cattle and goats were successfully rescued and relocated to safety.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out in a textile showroom in Kelambakkam early Sunday morning. With the assistance of five fire tenders, the Kelambakkam police, along with units from Sipcot, Thoraipakkam, Medavakkam, Mamallapuram, and Kalavakkam, managed to extinguish the fire. Dress material worth thousands of rupees was lost, and authorities suspect an electrical short circuit may have caused the blaze. An investigation is underway, and the Kelambakkam police have filed a case.
