Renowned TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently shared insights in a blog post, asserting that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models could incorporate a stacked CMOS image sensor (CIS) design. This technological advancement holds the potential to elevate the photographic prowess of these handsets. Meanwhile, this year’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are purported to embrace stacked complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors for their 48-megapixel rear cameras. The camera enhancements in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 lineups are expected to favor Chinese manufacturer Will Semiconductor due to supply constraints from Sony, a leading supplier.
Kuo further predicts that Sony’s limited capacity will persist until 2025, potentially benefiting Will Semi as a rival CIS supplier. He estimates a substantial surge in Will Semi’s high-end CIS shipments, projecting an increase of around 50 percent to reach 36 million units in the latter half of 2024.
Beyond the intriguing camera developments, rumors surrounding the iPhone 16 series also highlight the incorporation of advanced battery technology, promising improved battery life compared to conventional batteries. Additionally, Apple might introduce enhanced charging capabilities, including 40W wired and 20W MagSafe wireless charging options in the upcoming iPhone units.
