Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has taken a bold step by rebranding Twitter as X, leaving behind the iconic blue bird logo and venturing into a new era for the company. This move reflects Musk’s fascination with the letter X, which he has shown through various initiatives. For instance, his electric car company, Tesla, adopted a naming strategy that spelled out “SEXY” with its car models: Model S, Model 3 (originally planned as Model E), Model X, and Model Y.
Musk’s fascination with the letter X began with the launch of X.com, an online banking services platform that later became part of PayPal, earning him $165 million and fueling his dream of creating a bigger X brand.
This passion for X led to the establishment of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, better known as SpaceX, where the X symbolizes a rocket’s trajectory, representing Musk’s vision for space exploration.
However, Tesla’s original plan to name its entry-level sedan Model E faced obstacles when Ford acquired the rights to the name, reminiscent of Henry Ford’s iconic Model T. In response, Musk humorously changed the name to Model 3, forming the “S3XY” line-up alongside Model S and Model X.
Despite Ford’s legal challenge, Tesla continued with its unique naming scheme, culminating in the launch of Model Y in 2020, completing the “S3XY” line-up.
Now, there are speculations that Tesla might eventually drop the “Model” plus “letter” naming scheme to maintain the charm of the “S3XY” lineup. With Musk’s penchant for innovation and surprises, the future remains exciting for both Twitter and Tesla as they continue to forge new paths under the letter X’s symbolic influence.
