Ahead of the Asia Cup matches against arch-rivals India, Pakistan cricket legend Waqar Younis has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to emerge victorious. The two Asian neighbors are set to face each other on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka, with the tournament format potentially leading to multiple encounters between the teams.
Waqar referred to Pakistan’s triumph over India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final at The Oval, emphasizing that Pakistan has the capability to defeat India on any turf. He offered a simple piece of advice to the Pakistan team, urging them to play well in crucial matches.
During the Asia Cup trophy unveiling event in Lahore, Waqar highlighted that while their generation didn’t secure many major tournament victories against India, the current team has shown promise by winning important matches against their rivals. He saw this as a positive sign and believed that the burden of past losses has been lifted. Waqar asserted that with the talent present in the Pakistani side, they can overcome India in any location. Drawing on their victory at The Oval, he encouraged the team to play with the same confidence and aggression, likening them to tigers on the field.
In the previous edition of the Asia Cup in 2022, India secured a victory over Pakistan by 5 wickets in the opening match. However, Pakistan bounced back and secured a victory with the same margin when the teams faced each other for the second time in the tournament. This highlights the competitive nature of the rivalry and sets the stage for exciting encounters in the upcoming Asia Cup matches.
